A Short History

The building was designed by architects Clark and Bell and was opened to the public in 1873 as the city’s largest fish market for over a century. In addition to the 1873 building, due to market demand, in 1903 and 1914 the building was extended.

In the 1980s, the building was developed into a shopping area and finally, in 2009, The Briggait was re-developed by Wasp Studios for artists and cultural organisations to call home.

Architects Nicoll Russell Studios were employed to give the building a new lease of life, at the cost of £6.5 million. In its current state, the building offers 24 offices, 45 artist studios, 5 shop front units and a large exhibition space.
