What is Robin House?

"Robin House, in Balloch, is a 'home from home' for families. It has a range of facilities including a hydro pool, art room, den and large accessible garden and lots of areas for relaxing and fun. It also has quiet areas for reflection, bereavement support and care."

Background & The Design

Robin House was completed in August 2005. It was designed by Architecture firm Gareth Hoskins Architects and is valued at £8.2 million.

Robin House caters to children and young people with life-limiting disabilities. It offers residential care for around 8 children, as well as their families. There are two separate areas for both the families and children to sleep and various large activity areas for the families to spend time together in their 'home away from home'.

The designers ensured that in order to best utilise the space within the building and help those caring for the children, the children's rooms and the majority of facilities are located on the ground floor. This allows for ease of movement and with the use of large hallways and doors, a child can be easily moved around the entire building.

To maximise natural light, the designers placed the bedrooms facing south, as well as facilities such as the hydrotherapy pool and the library.

The lower level of the building holds the families bedrooms, along with various facilities such as a kitchen, laundry room and lounge. This allows the families to have some 'rest' time, and relax. For this purpose, all activities are located on the ground floor of the building.

Underneath the beautiful ribbon roof sits the main kitchen and dining areas, where families are able to sit and have meals together. The roof's structure allows for natural light to seep in whilst the families enjoy the space.

There is a large garden which is fully accessible. It has many sensory features, a playground, and areas to sit, relax and take in your surroundings.
